The Walled Garden
Meet the Team
The Walled Garden is governed by a board of five trustees.
Thomas Edward Coke, succeeded to the title in May 2015. He had been actively involved in managing the estate since 1993, when he left the army, taking over from his father in 2007 and sits on the board of trustees. He has overseen the diversification of the estate away from its dependence on agriculture toward leisure, tourism and property development. He is the patron of the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust which is a not for profit registered charity working to preserve, save, enhance and promote the historic built environment.
George is based in north Norfolk and is a garden designer specialising in formal gardens. As a garden historian, he has extensive experience of the restoration and reconstruction of historic gardens from a wide range of dates. George has written several books on garden design and exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show from 1985 and has received several RHS gold medals.
Anthea was Norfolk County Organiser for the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) for 22 years and served as a Trustee for the Charity from 2001 to 2008. She is a partner in WRB Foster & Partners, which runs a 4,400 estate in West Norfolk. The formal gardens were totally destroyed during WWII and were restored by Mrs William Foster with the help of Dame Sylvia Crowe and Jim Russell between 1946 – 1986. The garden has been further developed by Anthea and her husband, Neil, over the last twenty five years, and has included several substantial new planting schemes, particularly in the walled garden.
Lucy is a landscape designer who creates understated elegant gardens that are in tune with their surroundings, she also acts as a consultant breathing new life into existing gardens. She is based in both north Norfolk and London.
Peter is Holkham’s new Managing Director, having joined the estate in March 2018.
Head Gardener, Dene joined the team in 2013. He is responsible for the day-to-day management of the estate-wide gardening and landscaping services. Dene is particularly interested in the fruit and vegetable production, ensuring there is enough seasonal produce to go to the hall every week.
Gardens Supervisor Simon joined the team in 2008 and is Dene’s right hand man in the walled garden. Simon has a background in plant nurseries and propagation, which he puts to good use in the cut flower garden. He coordinates and motivates the garden volunteers, with help from Lesley.
Lesley completed her training four years ago and ran her own business providing garden care in north Norfolk until she joined Holkham’s Gardening Team in June 2017. Her main role in the walled garden, working alongside the volunteers and Simon Bosley the Garden Supervisor, is to continue the efforts of all the team to restore the garden and progress it into the future. Along with the Education Team, Lesley also runs a children’s gardening day once a month and helps by supporting the Education and Events Teams with gardening knowledge at events such as floristry workshops and school visits to the garden.
Our volunteers come from a varied background with the majority living locally. They bring passion, enthusiasm, loyalty and many different skills and they are an integral part of the walled garden.
