Free events at Holkham this Christmas
Start December with Carols in the Courtyard
What better way to begin the countdown to Christmas than with a good old singalong? Join us in the Stables Courtyard on Thursday 3rd December for Carols in the Courtyard.
We’ll be joined by YourChoir and will be fundraising for Coastal Health and Wellbeing, a community hub promoting the positive health and wellbeing of local residents in and around Wells-next-the-Sea.
So gather your friends or family and wrap up warm for an evening of favourite carols. Don’t worry, song sheets will be provided if you need one! Dogs on leads are welcome, and parking for this event is complimentary.
Canine Carols (because dogs deserve a singalong too!)
More festive singing awaits you and your four-legged friends at our much-loved event, Canine Carols! This year it’s taking place on Monday 21st December, starting at 10:30am.
Reverend Sharon Plant will lead a short outdoor service celebrating our canine companions, followed by a dog show and a group walk around the lake. Fancy dress is welcome, so if you’ve always wanted to dress your pup up as Rudolph, now’s your chance!
Canine Carols is free, with a £6.50 parking charge for the day in Holkham Park. Whether you have a dog of your own or simply enjoy watching some very enthusiastic tails wagging, it’s a cheerful way to spend a December morning. And as it’s in the school holidays, it might be a hilarious day out with your children this Christmas.

Head to Holkham Beach for a winter wander
There’s something special about a bracing beach walk at this time of year, especially one with the vastness and views that Holkham Beach offers. So pull on your wellies and your warmest layers, feel the sea air on your cheeks and give yourself a little break from the Christmas preparations. Bring a flask or pick up a hot drink at The Lookout on Lady Anne’s Drive.
Holkham Beach welcomes dogs throughout the year, making it a lovely choice for a walk with your furry friend. Follow the signs and keep dogs close around wildlife so everyone can enjoy this special place.
To keep the kids entertained, try a simple beach spotting challenge: can they find a feather, a shell and three different types of footprint? Leave your finds where they are for the next little explorer to spot!
Enjoy the colourful sights of Wells Beach
If beach huts make you smile in summer, come and see them in winter too! Wells Beach is another lovely spot for a December stroll, with its colourful huts and pinewoods giving you plenty to admire along the way.
Choose a short wander or, if it’s not too blustery, enjoy the circular walk from Wells Beach car park to Holkham Gap, then head back through the trees. A long walk with a friend is the perfect way to catch up and talk through the craziness of the busy festive season, and is the perfect antidote to Christmas parties and the madness of prepping for the 25th!
Dogs are welcome in most areas across the beach at this time of year, but the eastern end has a dog-free section, so check the signs before heading onto the sand. Check tide times too, and leave plenty of daylight for your return. Beach parking charges apply.
Warm up with a seasonal treat at Wells Beach Café
Cold fingers, rosy cheeks and a hot chocolate to look forward to… that sounds like a good winter outing!
Tie your beach walk in with a visit to Wells Beach Café, where a warming drink makes a lovely Christmas treat. Choose a hot chocolate with the trimmings, or see which seasonal goodies tempt you on the day.
If you’re trying to reduce costs this Christmas, bring your reusable cup and enjoy 10% off your hot drink. Dogs are welcome inside the café and on cold days the fire will be on ready to get you feeling toasty again.
Enjoy a stroll through Holkham Park
If the sea air is too cold or you prefer paths to sand, come and stretch your legs in Holkham Park. Take in views of the Hall (all wrapped up in a big red bow!) and a frosty Holkham Lake. With plenty of way-marked paths around the estate, there is so much of Holkham to enjoy without paying for an attraction ticket.
Take your time, enjoy the views and spot wildlife and the fallow deer herd as you walk. Dogs are welcome on leads, making this an easy outing to share with friends, family and furry companions.
It’s free to enter the park on foot (and there’s a bus stop just outside!). Parking is charged separately. The park is open throughout December except Christmas Day. Remember to check opening times when planning your visit.
Follow the lakeside nature trail
If you’re looking for a little more structure, turn your parkland walk into a mini expedition by following the nature trail around Holkham Lake.
The circular trail has 28 stops, with information, things to look for and ideas to get you talking along the way. It’s a great way to keep nature-loving kids entertained en route, and grown-ups might learn something new too!
Allow time to pause rather than rushing around. Who can spot something moving on the water? What can you hear when everyone stands quietly?
The trail is free to enjoy as part of your park visit. You may want to add on a snack, drink or lunch at the Courtyard Café while you’re here – there are plenty of hot, cold, sweet and savoury options to choose from.
Look and listen for pink-footed geese
Most of our winter visitors arrive with wings! Thousands of pink-footed geese spend the colder months on the National Nature Reserve, and looking out for them is a wonderful reason to slow down during your walk, either on the reserve, beach or in the park.
Listen for their calls and watch for flocks overhead. Bring binoculars if you have them, but you’re sure to spot them even if you don’t. The flocks fly in large groups, and it’s always a wonderful sight seeing them flying overhead.
Of course, there are plenty of other birds too! Keep your eyes peeled for Red Kites and Buzzards gliding over the park.
Let little adventurers explore the Woodland Play Area
For children who still have energy after a walk, our Woodland Play Area is the place to go! There are bridges, climbing frames and slides, plus a separate toddler area for the little ones.
Entry is free, with the park’s parking charge applying if you arrive by car.
Just a heads up – bad weather means the play area can sometimes close at short notice if equipment becomes slippery or unsafe.
Enjoy a budget-friendly day out at Holkham this Christmas
You could pair a parkland walk with the nature trail, follow a beach wander with a warming drink, or gather everyone for an evening of carols. Pack a flask and some sandwiches for a budget-friendly day out, and choose a pace that suits your group.
Before visiting, check our latest opening times, event information and parking charges, as these can vary over the festive period.
We hope you’ll join us for some fresh air, festive fun and time together at Holkham this Christmas!
