A pick-me-up for you and your garden too.

April 30, 2026 | WONDER | 2 minute read

Next time you pick up a coffee in the Courtyard Café, there’s something else you can take away with you and it might just give your garden a welcome boost.

Across our cafés, we produce around six tonnes of coffee grounds each year. Rather than letting them go to waste, we offer them to visitors free of charge, ready to be reused at home. It’s a small, simple idea that fits neatly into our WONDER approach.

Coffee grounds are surprisingly versatile. If you’re a keen gardener (or just getting started) they can be a useful addition to your routine. Rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, they help to enrich soil and support healthy plant growth. Adding them to your compost heap is an easy first step, giving your compost a natural boost.

You can also dig the grounds directly into your soil. This helps improve structure, aeration and drainage, creating better conditions for roots to thrive. If you prefer, spread them on the surface as a mulch or mix them into leaf mould. This can help reduce water loss, while also acting as a natural deterrent to slugs, snails and even the occasional curious cat!

For those who enjoy experimenting, there are a few other ways to make the most of them. Mixed with water, coffee grounds can be turned into a gentle liquid feed for acid-loving plants. They can also be added to a worm bin, where they support digestion and keep your composting companions content. Some gardeners even use them as a growing medium for mushrooms, thanks to their ability to retain moisture and nutrients.

By taking a bag of coffee grounds home with you, you’re helping to reduce waste while giving something back to the soil.

So, next time you visit, keep an eye out. Your morning coffee could help your garden feel great too.
