Creating more compost

Across the estate we generate lots of grass cuttings, hedge prunings and other materials which can be composted. At a small scale, we compost this at the Walled Garden including excess produce and old plants.

At the other end of the scale, our farms generate larger volumes of waste from the sugar beet harvest and cutting hay meadows. We are running a feasibility study into how we can take all the estate’s green and brown waste, including farmyard manure from the cattle, and create compost on a larger scale. We would then apply this to the gardens and farm, adding organic matter rather than man-made nitrate fertiliser.
