Outdoor Theatre

What better setting to enjoy a summer evening’s theatre than our beautiful walled gardens. For 2018 we will be offering a range of carefully selected performances to include popular titles of comedy and drama and welcome the return of some brilliant theatre companies whose performances are guaranteed to enthral and captivate the audience.

Please bring your own rugs or low-backed seating and come prepared for all weathers. Theatre-goers will be admitted to the gardens 45 minutes before the production starts. For the enjoyment of all, visitors with chairs will be asked to sit to the sides and back of the seating area and those with picnic blankets to the front and centre.

The Railway Children

Wednesday 25th July, 6.15pm

Attention passengers -we are sorry to announce that all services out of Gigglesworth Station are delayed! Gather around Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis on platform one as they pass the time by sharing the classic tale of The Railway Children. Living by the railway line, the children spend quite a bit of time watching the trains and making some unexpected friendships. There is the old gentleman who regularly takes the 9.15 train and who helps them solve the mystery of what happened to their father. And there is the Russian immigrant who teaches them that compassion and understanding cross all boundaries. All aboard and full steam ahead! Find your travel companions and take your seats for Heartbreak Productions’ outdoor adaptation of The Railway Children, a classic children’s tale by Edith Nesbit.

Treasure Island

When Jim Hawkins discovers a treasure map amongst the possessions of the late ‘Captain’ Billy Bones, it hurtles him in to a cat and mouse game with dangerous pirates, taking him across the world to Treasure Island. Will Jim find the treasure; Will he make it back to England and should he trust the mysterious ship’s cook, Long John Silver? With inventive staging, original songs and magical storytelling, we invite audiences to enjoy this classic tale of adventure, treasure and, of course, rum, in Boxtree Production’s unique and energetic way!

The Adventures of Dr Dolittle

Wednesday 8th August, 6.15pm

Dr John Dolittle of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh starts out as a human doctor, but once he is taught by his wise old parrot called Polynesia how to talk to animals, he becomes the most celebrated veterinary doctor in England. Word of his skills spreads and animals across the world send messages asking for his help. So Dr Dolittle buys a leaky old ship and, together with his trusty pet crew of Jip the dog, Chee-Chee the monkey, Dab-Dab the Duck and permanently hungry Gub-Gub the pig, he sets forth on a mission to heal illness, to right wrongs and to gain a greater understanding of the animal kingdom. A funny, much-loved and exciting adventure, with a strong message about responsibility towards animals and the environment, brought to you by Illyria. We recommend that this performance is suitable for cheeky monkeys aged 5+.

The Midnight Gang

Tom and his friends will be there too but you might know them best as The Midnight Gang. When everyone else is sweetly sleeping they gather in the middle of the night in the name of magic, mischief, and memory making. Join Heartbreak and the gang on this crucial mission to overcome our greatest fears and uncover the magic ingredient to a fantastic friendship. The Tempest

Wednesday 29th August, 6.30pm

This summer The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an all-male cast, will perform Shakespeare’s spellbinding masterpiece The Tempest; a play of soaring poetry, high comedy and tender love, which has mesmerised and moved audiences for over 400 years. In full Elizabethan costume with traditional music and dance and with some of Shakespeare’s most memorable speeches, the production is packed with famous characters - from the elemental and ethereal Caliban and Ariel, to the comic clowns Trinculo and Stephano, along with the enchanting force that unites them all, Prospero. Sit back and be entertained with this truly theatrical play featuring Prospero, the usurped Duke of Milan, and his daughter Miranda, after being cast out from their home are washed up on a distant, mystical island. 12 years later his enemies are blown off course towards them. Using his powers of magic, he raises a tempest to shipwreck them on the island. After being left to plot his revenge for years he finally has the chance to exact it… But will he?
