December 4, 2019 | Weddings and celebrations | 7 minute read

Come 1st December, the extravagant state rooms at Holkham are adorned with opulent Christmas decorations adding an extra wow factor to weddings at the Norfolk venue. What could be better than being wed by candlelight underneath the breath-taking Marble Hall ceiling while carollers sing your favourite hymns in front of 30ft columns of sparkling fairy lights?

When it comes to a Christmas wedding, we’re huge fans, but they do take some careful planning. Read on to learn everything you need to know about having a Christmas wedding at Holkham Estate, Norfolk.

Although December is outside of the peak wedding season, with July and August being the most popular months to get married in, make sure to plan ahead if you want Christmas wedding. Our Norfolk wedding and events venue gets booked up well in advance, not just for weddings but for anniversary or birthday parties and corporate events, such as Christmas parties. It may also surprise you how many wedding suppliers and venues are booked up with events during the festive period.

The Christmas period is also very busy for your guests. From seeing friends and family, attending work Christmas events or even holidays, there are a lot of events going on during December. With this in mind, if you are considering planning a wedding near Christmas try send your save the date as early as possible to give guests enough notice and avoid any last-minute cancellations.

Holkham Hall has become famous for its spectacular Christmas decorations. Every year the state rooms get a fantastic make-over thanks to Lady Leicester’s creative genius. This includes beautiful, sparkling decorations in the Marble Hall, hanging snow-flakes and an abundance of fairy lights and candles – festive weddings are just made for cosy candlelight and twinkling decorations! You can still put your personal touch on the venue spaces with lush foliage and beautiful winter flower arrangements. But if you’d rather just embrace what’s already on display then you’ll save on your decorations budget.

While we can’t promise a white Christmas here at Holkham, you may still get one. Snow covered fields are beautiful for wedding photos but a downfall can affect your guest’s and supplier’s journeys to and from the wedding. Holkham’s driveway is a properly tarmacked road and when it gets snowed under it is salted and cleared by the estate team, so nothing will stop your guests getting to your big day. As we work mostly with local Norfolk suppliers, they are used to navigating icy country lanes and won’t have any trouble accessing the wedding venue come rain or snow.

The benefit of having multiple spaces for ceremonies and receptions on the Holkham estate means you don’t need to worry about how your guests will get between venues. All of the spaces are well-heated, so you won’t have guests standing around freezing, and we can provide outdoor heaters for those who want to experience the estate’s views. Plus, little details such as indoor bathrooms and in the Lady Elizabeth Wing and pathways lit up by atmospheric festoon lighting, make your guest’s experience at Holkham relaxed and comfortable.

As experienced wedding planners our team at Holkham have run more than their fair share of winter weddings so know exactly what needs planning to make sure everything runs smoothly and you have a wonderful, memorable wedding day.
