In summer 2026, Ryan spent a week with the Land and Property Team, visiting the Holkham National Nature Reserve, learning about all things related to property letting, compliance and systems, touring our holidays lets and meeting other teams across the Holkham Estate. Read on to find out from Ryan what he got up to and what he has learned.

Completing my work experience at Holkham, I have been shadowing the role of a housing and property assistant. This was an incredible opportunity for me to gain insight into the property and housing sector,  to gain practical experience and learn from knowledgeable, kind professionals who were willing to share their expertise.

Throughout my short time here I have been able to:

• Get first-hand experience of working conditions in different environments

• Find out about jobs and careers by working alongside people who are doing these jobs

• Learn, apply and practice the skills needed in this field of work

• Understand the discipline and relationships to be found in a working environment

Working at Holkham is an amazing opportunity that comes with many benefits. I had the chance to be allowed to experience everything the estate has to offer. I was able to see how such a large historic estate operates behind the scenes while learning about the wide variety of careers that make it all possible.

Holkham has much to offer. Through the 25000 acres of land owned within the walls, Holkham manages over 20 distinct rural businesses and directly employs over 350 people, offering a massive variety of roles.

I seized the opportunity to take upon my work experience here because I had a key interest in housing and property, and I wanted to further develop that into a skill by becoming more knowledgeable in that field of work to one day pursue a career in it. I have learned highly versatile skills sets tailored for real estate, property management, and public administration sectors and I hope to apply this to further careers to be the most successful I can be in them, but most of all I had fun.
