Monday
My week at Holkham kicked off with an exciting start as after a quick overview of the Holkham website and the fast paced world of marketing, Clem and I headed down to The Victoria to capture content for the monthly recipe video for social media, and this month’s star was a delicious summer berry dessert excellently crafted by Michael the head chef (which we did get to ‘sample’ after!!).
Fuelled by our lovely second breakfast, Clem and I then edited Holkham’s website adding fresh content, aiming to increase audience traction and boost engagement.
Then came a truly exciting moment, the marketing team and I jetted off to see a thriving kaleidoscope of Chalkhill blue butterflies. Just seven years ago there were only three – now years later over a thousand enjoy the summer sun at the Burrows.
At the office, Emma and I then worked on Holkham’s brand image and created a poster for the boat hire at Holkham Hall in the summer. I found the use of typography particularly inspiring – the two core fonts beautifully reflect the relationship between the present and future just like the estate itself.
To round off a fabulous first day, I worked with Jo on the socials side of marketing and scheduled an Instagram and Meta post for the summer at Holkham Hall. She also talked me through behind the scenes of social media ads including how AI is transforming digital marketing and why knowing your audience is everything.
Tuesday
I began the day shadowing Sophie who was the duty manager as we made the rounds across all the different leisure businesses of Holkham, such as Pinewoods and The Lookout. This was fascinating as I got to see the importance of creating a strong cross team collaboration to ensure a positive environment runs throughout the estate.
After lunch I was handed the reins (literally!) to plan Holkham’s Halloween trail in the Walled Garden. I created a mood board for the marketing aspects such as the colours, fonts, and the theme for the design of the map, posters and other elements needed. I then created a short but detailed plan of the event itself including the trail and the decorations needed for the day. This was a highlight of the week and really cemented my passion for combining marketing and events in my future studies.
Wednesday
Wednesday began with an attic tour of Holkham Hall which was interesting as I was able to see the bountiful history and artwork inside and attended a briefing for the volunteers that work to sustain and protect the Hall’s chattels.
After that I then joined Niamh (weddings manager) in a show around for a couple looking to get married at Holkham in September. We visited the Saloon and the Temple aspossible venues for their wedding day. Later, we helped run a rehearsal for Thursday’s wedding. I helped in setting up the Temple and walking the couple through their day. I also contributed to Holkham Weddings’ social media by writing captions for gorgeous photos from past celebrations
Thursday
Wedding day finally!!!!! In the morning, Niamh talked me through and showed me the journey that couples go through starting at booking a consultation to the final ‘I do’. I found this very incredible as I could see the aspects of marketing and events planning work together to create seamless and unforgettable experiences.
Then it was time to head down to the temple to set up for Ian and Victoria’s ceremony. The florist then arrived and made the temple feel very magical, and soon the photographer, celebrant and guests arrived!! After the ceremony it was time for a glass of fizz (not for us obviously though!) and pictures by the Hall for the newly weds, which was a lovely end to my time with the weddings team.
Friday
On my final day, I met Shirley, who is events manager and together we prepared the seating and name plates ready for the weekend’s Diva Opera performances. Afterwards, we headed down to Feast in the Park, the summer food festival, where I helped with the logistics of the event such as setting up flags, positioning food trucks and powering up the site. Later, back in the marketing office, Lucy gave me a crash course in Mailchimp and Google Analytics (GA4) which was amazing to see how the behind-the-scenes data helps to shape everything from website content to social media strategy.
My week at Holkham has been truly inspiring, from weddings and butterflies to berry desserts and spooky trails, I’ve had a deep dive into all aspects of marketing and events and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the entire team at Holkham.
An immense thank you to Lucy, Clementine, Emma, Jo, Sophie, Belle, Niamh, Shirley and everyone else that made this week fantastic!
