Work experience for school and college students

Here at Holkham, we’re happy to offer work experience opportunities for local school and college students.

These placements help students to explore their potential career path and learn more about what we do across the estate.

Placements are generally a couple of days to a fortnight long and can be taken with a number of businesses and teams at Holkham.

Where will your work experience take you?

Holkham is formed of many businesses and teams, so there’s plenty of opportunities for you to learn and develop skills in an area that’s interesting to you. Sometimes students split their work experience across multiple teams.

Wildlife and Landscape Management

Get out in nature with our Landscape Team in the Walled Garden, Conservation Team on the Nature Reserve or with our Forestry Team in our woodlands.

Tourism and Leisure

Join our Visitor Services Team welcoming our customers to our attractions and Gift Shop, our Events Team delivering weddings and private events, or our teams creating memorable stays at our Pinewoods Holiday Park and The Victoria hotel.

Hospitality

Find out what is involved in running our three busy and unique cafés and the award-winning restaurant at The Victoria.

Business and Economics

Learn more about the running of a business and the day to day problem solving and planning with our Finance Team, Enterprises Team, Property Team and People and Culture Team.

History and Collections

Fascinated with history or art? Spend time in Holkham Hall with our Archives and Collections Team and learn more about our historic collections and what is involved in recording and preserving them.

Education and Learning

Our Education Team welcomes school groups, youth centres, home school visits and plans educational events at Holkham throughout the year.

Agriculture

If farming is a path you would like to explore come and spend some time with our Arable and Livestock Teams at Holkham Farming Company and Holkham Emerald – both pioneers in land management and food production.

Craftsmanship

Come and see what our Holkham Building Maintenance Team, Joinery Team and Carpentry Team get up to on a daily basis taking care of historic buildings across the estate.

Media and Communications

Interested in brand and the promotional side of business? Try your hand at design work, photography, copy writing, social media scheduling and website publishing with our Marketing Team.

Grace’s Work Experience

Grace joined the Events, Weddings and Marketing Team for work experience before selecting her degree course. During her time with us Grace took part in a number of activities including:

  • Event planning and brief writing
  • Duty manager rounds
  • Volunteer briefing
  • Wedding couple show-rounds
  • Wedding set up
  • Social media content creation
  • Brand building and design work
  • Nature reserve walk with Jake Fiennes

Tilly’s Work Experience

Tilly joined the Marketing Team for a week and was involved with:

  • Designing posters
  • Content creation
  • Social media scheduling
  • Editing reels and Instagram posts
  • Caption writing
  • Website updates

Alara’s work experience

Alara joined the Marketing team for work experience taking part in a number of activities including:

  • Assisting with our Christmas press launch
  • Collating information and photographs for a gift guide
  • Adding events to various listing websites to increase awareness
  • Supporting with preparations for our Audience with Father Christmas event
  • Proof-reading copy for the Holkham website
  • Setting up an online survey for customers
  • Joining meetings with the Marketing and Enterprises teams

Harry’s work experience

Harry completed his work experience with time spent in the Visitor Experience, Archives, Facilities, Marketing, Cycle Hire and Events teams.

During his varied week, he:

  •  Supported our Collections Coordinator and Archivist in Holkham’s attics and archives
  • Welcomed visitors and handled financial transactions in the Hall, Walled Garden and Cycle Hire hut
  • Supported with content creation: editing audio clips, taking photographs and videos for social media
  • Assisted in locking up the Hall
  • Gained insight into our sustianability policy, WONDER, and events by attending meetings
  • Conducted SWOT analyses including providing an external perspective on Holkham’s events
  • Worked with the Hall Stewards and learnt about the State Rooms

“Upon reflecting on the week, I have had an amazing time and the nerves I had on the first day are entirely gone and replaced by confidence. It is so utterly different at Holkham than to anything near where I live in Birmingham, and I have really enjoyed the experiences and the atmosphere here. On the first day when I drove through the south gate, I was taken aback by the pure scale of Holkham, and that sense of awe has yet to cease as I am constantly learning new things about how it’s run and about the estate itself.”

Harry

“In the future, I want to go to university and hopefully then go into law. During work experience at Holkham, I have learnt about the importance of adapting, which will be helpful in law. There’s always going to be new things coming up. You can have a plan, but you need to be able to incorporate things into that. I loved the Christmas side of things. Seeing the Hall was great and seeing how much effort goes into the Christmas events and details was really interesting.”
