Colette’s Work Experience Week At Holkham

July 10, 2026 | Holkham voices | 4 minute read

My name is Colette and for my year 10 work experience I chose to go to Holkham with the marketing and education teams. I decided to go down this route because I wanted to see how the advertising of events and of the estate was done, as well as seeing how different school trips are done and how its like for the organisation running it, while also experiencing the world of work.

An event Toblerone in the Holkham Courtyard Café.

At the start of my work experience week, I was given a brief overview of the business and organisations that take place in Holkham and then went to the marketing team and was introduced into the role it plays throughout the organisation. To begin the day, I created some table talkers for the café at the estate, promoting the ‘stay your way this summer’ campaign.  I was able to choose the colours, and the images, and learned how to create them! It was something I had never done before, but I really enjoyed it! After lunch I went to the walled garden, to take pictures of the plants and flowers that are in bloom. All the plants were looking so bright and vibrant in the summer sun! After this, I went to the hall and looked around the rooms and at the pottery exhibition! I captured many images of both the plants in the walled garden and then in the hall itself.  In the afternoon I updated a website and responded to comments on recent social media posts! It was interesting to see how a website is put together!

On Tuesday, I created a blog for the Holkham website, called ‘a great day out at Holkham this summer’.  I wrote everything myself and choose the images, I even uploaded it to the website. I really enjoyed doing this, as I loved writing it and, taking some of the images, of which two were used in the blog, it was such a fun process and I hope to continue writing, after I have finished school.

On Wednesday, I was with the education team, I was helping a group of high school students on their school trip. In the morning, I was in the walled garden, listening to a talk about sustainability and on a tractor ride seeing all around the park. In the afternoon I went to Monica’s Meadow, with the same school group and they were learning about biodiversity and how you measure it. The meadow was very pretty and filled with butterflies, I was also able to take some photos of the kids measuring the biodiversity of the meadow.

On Thursday, I went to the beach with the education team and helped with a school trip for Year 2. In the morning they went to the beach, to collect shells and create art with them, and in the afternoon, they went on a bug hunt in the pinewoods and recreated what they saw out of clay!  Some made spiders and ladybirds and others made hedgehogs, as they had seen there home. Both of my days with education were very interesting because it showed me what school trips are like for the people who are hosting it!

And on Friday, I was with marketing again and I interviewed Kevin, for the website. I asked him various questions, which I then wrote up and took photos of him for the interview and uploaded it to the website. I also wrote my work experience blog and choose the images for it, which you are reading now!

I have really enjoyed my time on work experience! It has been really fun, and it has been interesting, to see what the world of work is like! Overall, I think I preferred marketing, because I really enjoyed the writing the blogs and taking the photos, but I thoroughly enjoyed both!
