North norfolk Walk from The Victoria at Holkham

Countryside and Coastal – a wonderful walk from The Victoria.

One of the best things about staying at The Victoria (apart from the fantastic food, warm welcome, and overall relaxing experience) is the opportunity to explore the local environment on foot. Undoubtedly, there are extensive options for walking in and around Holkham, but if you fancied something a little further afield, you could jump on the Coastliner bus and take a trip to the next town and explore receptionist Lauren’s favourite countryside walk:

One of my favourite walks is from Burnham Market to Burnham Overy, via Burnham Norton. It is about 4.5 miles (7km) and I would definitely recommend good footwear as it can get quite muddy on the coast!

The walk begins in the centre of Burnham Market. From here, head up Herrings Lane to the top of the hill and enjoy the beautiful views out to the sea. Just over the top of the hill is a bridle path on the left hand-side. Take this path and walk alongside two fields. This path does lead to the main coast road, so if you are taking your four legged friends please be sure to put them on their lead about half way across the second field.

Cross the road at the end and walk through Burnham Norton village towards the sea. As you get to the end of the village, a sign indicates that you need to go through the cattle gate and follow the path with reed beds either side of you.

This path takes a turn to the right, before continuing to weave through the marshes. Stay on this route until you see a path that goes across a field and heads towards the windmill. Again, there are fantastic views looking out over the Burnham Overy marshes and out to sea.

Follow the pedestrian path from the edge of the village and keep walking until you reach The Hero, a great place to nip in for a well-deserved hot chocolate or pint!

After your refreshments continue past The Hero, taking the road with houses on either side. Continue on this road until you reach a small country path bordered by hedges. Take this path and stay to the right when it parts.

At the end of this path, you will arrive at a graveyard. Walk along the road, following it around to the left and crossing over the sharp bend in the road  be careful of traffic here).

Walk towards the watermill and then carry on down this road back into Burnham Market. You can then explore the variety of shops and cafes in town, before catching the bus back, and having a well deserved rest in the bar before dinner at The Victoria.

This is a lovely walk and takes in lots of picturesque villages on the way. Click here for a map
