Filming at Holkham
In June 2012 BBC Countryfile filmed at Holkham as part of their programme covering the north Norfolk coastline. The programme was aired in mid-July.
Filming included an interview with our stockman, John Smith, who was a star for the day when he was filmed on the Holkham National Nature Reserve with some of the estate’s herd of cattle. Countryfile presenter and farmer, Adam Henson, talked to John about the herd and the quality of meat the cattle produce from grazing the marshes on the reserve.
The film crew then moved into the Walled Gardens at Holkham where presenter Ellie Harrison talked to our Head Gardener at that time, Tim Marshall, about the chilli plants raised in the glasshouses as part of the community Grower’s Scheme. The Community Growers’ Scheme was set up by local chilli sauce manufacturer Glyn Kirpalani of Norfolk Heatwave at nearby Cromer after he realised that sourcing Scotch Bonnet peppers in large quantities for his ‘Hot Pepper Sauce’ required flying them in from Holland or Uganda. The scheme provides customers and local residents with Scotch Bonnet chilli-pepper seedlings propagated from seeds in his own greenhouse and then come harvest time, Glyn buys back the harvest from the farmed-out plants. Tim showed Ellie some of the Scotch Bonnet plants we grow here and also talked about the progress of the walled gardens restoration project.
The BBC film crew also filmed Glyn Kirpalani in his factory using the peppers and making them into his sauces.
