Luis Gomes, Carole Presland

Tuesday 11th December - 7pm

Luis Gomes - Tenor and Carole Presland - Piano.

Songs by Rachmaninov, Fauré, Liszt, Bellini, Tosti and de Curtis, Piano solos by Ravel and Liszt, Arias by Mozart, Léhar, Donizetti and Verdi.

Portuguese tenor Luis Gomes was selected to join the elite Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 2009. This led to many appearances on the main stage at Covent Garden, notably, when as Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff, he became the first Portuguese singer to take a major role there. He has sung at Grange Park Opera, Scottish Opera, where he sang Rodolfo and at the Buxton Opera Festival. He sang Nemorino at the Teatro Verdi Trieste. This season he has been singing Beppe in Pagliacci where his powerful Italianate tenor impressed everyone, winning him critical acclaim. Other engagements include Haydn’s Nelson Mass in Lisbon, the Mozart Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall and Rossini’s Stabat Mater in Lisbon. He sung twice at the North Norfolk Music Festival where he performed in two gala evenings alongside his colleagues from the Royal Opera.

Luis is joined by pianist Carole Presland who has collaborated with many distinguished artists including Colin Carr, Gary Hoffman, Ralph Kirshbaum, Nobuko Imai, Anthony Marwood, Alexander Rudin as well as the Chilingirian, Endellion, Heath and Belcea Quartets. A dedicated teacher, she is part of the keyboard faculty of the Purcell School and the Royal Academy of Music. In 2013 she was elected an Hon ARAM and in the same year she was appointed Senior Co-ordinator of Keyboard Chamber Music at the Guildhall School of Music.

Their wonderfully varied programme includes well-known songs and arias and illustrates Liszt’s life-long fascination with Petrarch’s sonnets.

Tickets: £25 – Includes a glass of wine in the Saloon during the interval and an opportunity to view some of the other state rooms in the Hall. The performance will last approximately two hours.

From 24th October - 30th November, Luis Gomes will be delighting audiences, singing the role of Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata in Porto and then at Glyndebourne and several other cities throughout England in performances given as part of the annual Glyndebourne annual tour.

This is a rare opportunity to hear Norwich Cathedral Choir performing a Christmas concert away from the cathedral, in the beautiful surroundings of the Marble Hall at Holkham decorated for the festive season.

A feast of best-loved Christmas music both sacred and secular will be performed by the 52 strong choir, directed by Ashley Grote, Master of Music at Norwich Cathedral, with piano accompaniment from George Inscoe, Organ Scholar of Norwich Cathedral. The concert is in aid of Norwich Cathedral Music Appeal, which is seeking to raise funds for the complete restoration of the Cathedral’s magnificent 105-stop organ, to improve our provision for the Cathedral girls’ choir (now in its 23rd year), and to ensure the financial security of our traditional boys’ choir into the future.
