Art and the Designed Landscape

Art and the Designed Landscape

Wednesday 16th December

Tickets: £65, includes parking, refreshments and a light lunch.

The park as we see it today may look natural, but it is the culmination of many years of bold ambitions, incredible plans and landscaping by big name designers. Join our experts to discover the inspiration for Holkham Hall’s incredible setting, the people who turned this vision into reality and the features that make this landscape so special.

Beginning at the Triumphal Arch you will be guided on a chronological journey through Holkham Park. We’ll stop off to visit Holkham Hall to see the paintings in the collection which were the inspiration behind the landscape, as well as a chance to view renowned landscape designer Humphrey Repton’s famous Red Book.

As the tour continues, we’ll visit the various follies hidden within the park, journey to the Walled Garden and visit behind the scenes as well as Holkham Hall’s private terraces and the Arboretum.

Throughout the day you’ll be in the very capable hands of our librarian and historian Dr Mac Graham and head gardener Mark Morrell as well as other experts leading ongoing restoration work including Messenger Conservation.

Please note:
You need to be able to walk a fair distance as the majority of the day will spent walking and appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather is advised. You will need to wear face coverings whilst in Holkham Hall and any other indoor spaces visited throughout the day. Social distancing measures and hand sanitisers will be in place to help keep you safe. Maximum 12 participants per tour. Meet at the South Gates (NR23 1RU brings you pretty close).
