Yevgeny Sudbin

Saturday 19th October 2019, 7pm

Yevgeny Sudbin piano

Scarlatti: Sonatas
Tchaikovsky/Sudbin: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture
Tchaikovsky: 2 Nocturnes
Scriabin: Nocturne for left hand
Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit

Yevgeny Sudbin was born in Saint Petersburg in 1980. As a child he moved to Berlin, then aged 17 to London where he studied at The Purcell School and at the Royal Academy of Music. He has given solo recitals and appeared with major orchestras as a soloist around the globe. During the 2018/19 season he will give recitals in Vancouver, Milan, London, Birmingham and Belgrade, and will appear with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the National Centre for Performing Arts, Beijing and the London Chamber Orchestra. He has an extensive discography to which in 2018 he added a recording of late Beethoven sonatas. He is a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music.

Sudbin’s highly engaging programme ranges from the crystalline textures of Scarlatti to his own dazzling piano transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture. Finishing with Ravel’s demanding and revolutionary ‘Gaspard de la nuit’ will undoubtedly bring this recital to a thrilling conclusion.

“Sudbin’s great quality was his acute sense of characterisation, conveying not just the letter of the music through his consummate technique, but also its spirit through his intuition and inspiration. Any chance to hear him should be snapped up.” The Daily Telegraph.

Tickets: £28 – Includes a glass of wine in the Saloon during the interval and an opportunity to view some of the other state rooms in the hall.

Chiaroscuro String Quartet

Saturday 2nd November 2019, 7pm

Chiaroscuro Quartet
Alina Ibragimova and Pablo Hernan Benedi violin, Emilie Hörnlund viola, Claire Thirion cello

Haydn: String Quartet in E flat Opus 33 No. 2 ‘The Joke’
Fanny Mendelssohn: String Quartet in E flat
Beethoven: String Quartet in B flat Opus 130 (with Finale)

The quartet was formed in 2005 by the internationally acclaimed Russian violinist, Alina Ibragimova, together with Pablo Hernan Benedi from Spain, Emilie Hörnlund from Sweden and Claire Thirion from France. The quartet plays music from the classical and romantic periods on instruments set up in the authentic classical way, with gut strings, and they use classical, as opposed to modern, bows.

Highlights of their 2019 season include a tour of the USA, featuring a concert at Carnegie Hall, and tours of Canada, Japan and China. Their CD of two quartets by Schubert, including Death and the Maiden, was voted CD of the Week on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Building a Library’ in November 2018.

It will be fascinating to see how the Chiaroscuro Quartet shine their historically informed light on two standard repertory works by Haydn and Beethoven, as well as to hear Mendelssohn’s beloved sister’s charming and beautiful solitary string quartet.

“Immaculate and spirited ...The playing is intense and refined, exploratory and poised. The sound is featherweight, but there is grit and substance when needed…” The Guardian.

Tickets: £28 – Includes a glass of wine in the Saloon during the interval and an opportunity to view some of the other state rooms in the hall.
