Doric String Quartet

Friday 25th September, 5.30pm

Alex Redington and Ying Xue, violins
Hélène Clément, viola
John Myerscough, cello

Programme

MOZART String Quartet in F, K590
MENDELSSOHN String Quartet in D, Op.44 No.1
GRIEG String Quartet No.1, Op.87

Beginning with two well-known string quartets by Mozart and Mendelssohn, the Doric will then transport us to less familiar territory with the less often heard, sole complete quartet by Edvard Grieg, which the composer characterised as “a slice out of my own life,” and seems at the same time to conjure up the majestic scenery of his home country, Norway.

Within minutes after the end of the triumphant sold-out 2019 appearance in Holkham, plans were being made to invite the Doric String Quartet back to Norfolk in 2020. This will be the sixteenth consecutive year they have appeared in north Norfolk.

They are now firmly established as one of the leading quartets of their generation with many performances around the world
each year.

During the 2019/2020 season they will give three concerts at Wigmore Hall, in Germany, Switzerland and at the biennial quartet festival in Amsterdam. They will make their annual tour to the USA with performances in Phildadelphia, Washington DC, at Duke University in North Carolina, Dallas and California and make a return visit to Carnegie Hall. They will play at The Maltings, Snape in
June. This season they will give several performances with the violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cedric Tiberghien.

They will also add Haydn’s Op.33 quartets to their already extensive discography.

Tickets: £30, includes parking and a glass of wine in the interval. To book click on the button below, or telephone our ticket office on 01328 713111.

Gould Piano Trio

Saturday 31st October, 7.30pm

Lucy Gould, violin
Richard Lester, cello
Benjamin Frith, piano
with Simon Rowland-Jones, viola

Programme

SCHUBERT Notturno in E flat, D897
BRAHMS Piano Trio in C, Op.87
FAURÉ Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op.45

The programme begins with Schubert’s transcendental ‘Notturno’, probably the original slow movement of the B flat Piano Trio and a precursor to the slow movement of the great String Quintet in C, composed the following year. Gabriel Fauré’s second Piano Quartet may be less often heard than the first but is every bit as inspiring.

The Gould Piano Trio is a familiar and much-loved fixture in the world of chamber music throughout the UK and beyond. They have all been at the forefront of British musical life for more than twenty years. During the 2019/20 season they will visit the USA for performances in Portland, Oregon, San Jose and Florida, will give a performance at London’s Conway Hall and present their annual and much-loved festival in Corbridge, Northumberland, in July.

In addition to their performing careers, each member of the trio holds teaching positions at major conservatoires.

They will be joined for the Fauré by Simon Rowland-Jones, viola player and composer.

Tickets: £30, includes parking and a glass of wine in the interval. To book click on the button below, or telephone our ticket office on 01328 713111.
