“Maybe Christmas he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!”
Christmas 2018 is fast approaching, lights are beginning to sparkle through windows as Christmas trees are carefully decked, the streets are lined with candy canes and twinkling stars are appearing on every lamp post. Now that the 1st of December has finally arrived, plans for the big day are in full swing! For many, Christmas is a time of indulgence; there are parties and outings and food galore, work do’s, markets and mulled wine! There are family and friends that you see once a year but most of all plenty of Christmas cheer. But aside from all of that, there are those not able to leave the house over Christmas and those with no close family to spend it with.
How many of us spare a thought for those much less fortunate than ourselves, less able to celebrate or for those spending Christmas alone?
We all know that Christmas is a busy and expensive time of year and perhaps we can’t be as charitable as we’d like but there are other ways of lending your support this Christmas and all year round.
Our charity partner over the festive period is Heritage House, a day care centre for the elderly in nearby Wells-next-the-Sea. A safe haven for the elderly and frail of north Norfolk, who benefit from the warm company and companionship they find there.
Heritage House opens 5 days a week, welcoming over 90 different people in that time. Each day visitor receives a delicious home cooked meal and they are encouraged to take part in the day’s activity, ranging from quizzes and singing to painting or time in the garden! Visitors may benefit from a relaxing bath, a fresh haircut, a therapeutic massage or a chiropodist appointment. Many of the visitors live alone and look forward to their day at Heritage House each week.
How can you help?
To keep the care centre running, Heritage House relies on donations from fundraising initiatives throughout the year, as well as generous donations from friends of the centre.
The team also gladly welcome anyone who is able to donate their time to assist with transport, helping in the kitchen, socialising with members or helping at any fundraising events.
You might also like to lend your support by using your hobby or skills! Get in touch with Heritage House to see what special activity you could offer the visitors.
As well as all of the delicious food, drink and craft stalls at the fair, if you are joining us, you must pay the Heritage House stand a visit, where you’ll have the chance to meet the team and win some truly amazing prizes in their Christmas raffle. A wide range of local Norfolk businesses, restaurants and chefs have kindly donated a selection of prizes – from meals out in some of the best restaurants in Norfolk, overnight stays in luxury rooms to exquisite chef’s knives and handmade aprons perfect for Christmas day, just to name a few! The prizes are rolling in as we speak, this is not a raffle you’ll want to miss out on! Not forgetting the charity auction from the live cookery theatre, where you’ll have the chance to bid for the delicious ingredients for a truly magnificent feast.
A raffle ticket certainly won’t break the bank but your support would mean the world, we hope to see you at our Festive Food Fair.
Christmas is a time of giving – so why not give to those who need it most. Helping to put a smile on somebody’s face is worth a million times more than a gift under the tree.
