The Local Community
The estate is inseparable from its local community and our goal is to promote a sustainable local economy for the benefit of all the people who live and work in our community. For many generations we have provided village halls, scout huts, meeting rooms and playing fields rent free for groups and villages that fall within the estate. We support and sponsor local events and activities that foster a sense of community, like the Wells Triathlon and the Norfolk Superhero Challenge.
Wherever possible we use local businesses and suppliers like Arthur Howell butchers in Wells-next-the-Sea. Arthur is one of the few butchers who still operate an abattoir behind his shop and all the estate’s cattle are sent here for slaughter, less than a mile from the marshes where they have been raised.
Our business activities draw visitors to the local community and the 500,000 people a year who visit the Nature Reserve bring significant income to local businesses. We promote free community events like the preview of our annual summer season when everyone living in towns and villages around which the estate owns land is invited to a preview of the summer exhibition. We host a spectacular annual bonfire party and hog roast for all our staff, volunteers and tenants. Our building team maintain the church and occasionally step in to help local charities like Heritage House in Wells-next-the-Sea and the RNLI. We operate an estate discount scheme for our tenants and we give free season tickets and car parking passes to people living in Holkham village.
