Winner of BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2018 – Beach of the Year

We are delighted to announce that Holkham National Nature Reserve and beach have picked up BBC Countryfile Magazine’s award for Beach of the Year 2018.

This year almost 180,000 votes were cast by nearly 30,000 people and we are grateful to all voters who recognised the beauty in our stretch of the north Norfolk coastline.

The judges commented, “Stretching for four glorious and sandy miles, Holkham Beach was a clear winner in this category. Both a beach and a nature reserve, Holkham is home to diverse and fascinating species of flora and fauna, such as great white egrets, common terns, peregrines, ringed plover, dark green fritillary butterflies and ghost swift moths.”

Judge Fergus Collins said: “There is something exotic about this great strand of sand backed by pine trees, sand dunes and marshes – a place for a serene beach holiday and intimate encounters with such a wide variety of wildlife.”

The Victoria wins prestigious 2018 UK Heritage Award

A celebration at Goldsmith’s Hall on 6th March celebrated the best heritage experiences and places to stay in the UK. The competition is arranged by Visit Heritage, the UK’s leading heritage, tourism and destination marketing company, who also publish Signpost, an independent hotel guide.

The Victoria at Holkham is delighted to announce that is has been crowned the winner of the ‘Wonderful Places to Stay’ category. Thirteen categories had winners including nine UK Heritage Awards and four hotel awards. Leading the panel of judges was Norman Hudson OBE, joined by Ken Robinson CBE, author and TV presenter Lucinda Lambton, architectural writer and author Jeremy Musson, Director of Visit Heritage Paul Bridle and more.

The judges’ principle comment was that “The Victoria at Holkham was still an example of an all-round wonderful place to stay. The Victoria Inn’s location couldn’t be better; less than a mile from England’s best beach, views over Holkham National Nature Reserve and with brilliant access to Holkham Hall. The 20 bedrooms are named after shooting drives on the Holkham Estate and beef and lamb from the estate, along with game from the shoot when in season, feature on the menu.”

The Lady Elizabeth Wing wins a Bridebook Badge of Excellence

Out of hundreds of participants, The Lady Elizabeth Wing won the Silver Bridebook Wedding Awards 2018 Badge of Excellence. Badges go out to those who received the most reviews and testimonials from their community of couples on the site which recognise effort and hard work, dedication to great customer service and providing unforgettable experiences in 2017.

The Lady Elizabeth Wing at Holkham provides a stunning, contemporary space perfect for weddings, receptions, anniversary and birthday parties, concerts, conferences, dinners and all types of celebrations.

The team were very pleased to receive the award on 15th February 2018 and are very much looking forward to another busy 2018 full of exciting weddings and events.

The Lady Elizabeth Wing wins a Bridebook Badge of Excellence

New visitor facilities project wins prestigious RIBA East Award for architecture and conservation

Hopkins Architects, the architectural company behind the new visitor facilities project at Holkham, has won a prestigious RIBA East Award as well as the RIBA East Conservation Award. The awards were presented in recognition of the £4.5 million redevelopment project at Holkham to provide new visitor facilities. The major transformation of the former pottery factory and stables buildings has created exciting, new and improved facilities for visitors and a new events venue, The Lady Elizabeth Wing.

The awards were presented in a ceremony at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge on Thursday 18th May and recognise the best in new architectural projects throughout the region. Speaking of the project RIBA East commented “Overall the detail is of a high standard and the conversion is a clever and bold reuse of the existing buildings, giving Holkham Hall another venue of which it can be truly proud.”

The Victoria awarded highest accolade of a Gold Green Tourism Award

In 2016 The Victoria at Holkham joined ‘Green Tourism’; the largest and most established sustainable certification programme in the world. The Victoria’s aim is to achieve an outstanding commitment to working responsibly, ethically and sustainably, contributing to the community and reducing the impact on the environment whilst aiming to be accessible and inclusive to all visitors and staff.

On its first assessment The Victoria Inn has been awarded the highest accolade of a Gold Award in the awards.

The Gold Award recognises:
Achieving the highest standards of sustainability with a strong, broad ethos and excellent practices throughout.
Uses the latest technologies, from LED lighting to efficient boilers and renewables.
Efficient control of resource use and can demonstrate effective monitoring with targets for savings.
Green procurement includes sustainable fish/meat sources, a range of ethical products and working with local suppliers to provide fresh, local and often organic items.
Changes in working practices, bringing significant benefits to the business, community and supply chain.

Holkham Hall wins Hudson's Heritage Award 2017 in the Best Shopping category

Holkham Hall wins two prestigious 2017 Hudson’s Heritage Awards

Holkham Hall has won two of the prestigious 2017 Hudson’s Heritage Awards which were announced on Tuesday 14th March. Holkham picked up the awards in the categories of Best Family Day Out and Best Shopping, sponsored by Jarrold Publishing.

Established in 2011, the awards are an independently judged, annual, national scheme open to historic houses, gardens, museums and heritage sites and celebrate the very best visitor experiences.

Lady Leicester said “We are delighted to have won these 2017 Hudson’s Heritage Awards. They demonstrate the high standards and commitment we offer our visitors to ensure their experience is the very best. We are delighted to have the acknowledgment and recognition that Holkham Hall and our Gift Shop are amongst the elite of heritage attractions in the UK”.

Of the winners Sarah Greenwood, director at Hudson’s and publisher of Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens said “The finalists in 2017 showcase an amazing range of experiences just waiting for us all to enjoy at Britain’s heritage places. This year they include three World Heritage Sites but also iconic castles, public buildings, unusual gardens and stunning country houses several of which are not well known. We at Hudson’s would like to congratulate them all on setting the standards for others to follow”.

Penelope, Viscountess Cobham, CBE, Chairman of VisitEngland presented the awards at Goldsmiths Hall in London with invited guests including owners and managers of the winning entries, representatives of the heritage tourist industry and the media. The lunch was hosted by an independent judging panel of heritage experts including Chairman Norman Hudson OBE, heritage consultant; Lucinda Lambton, writer and broadcaster; Jeremy Musson, architectural writer; Simon Foster, consultant to Channel 4’s Country House Rescue and Ken Robinson, CBE, tourism business consultant.
