Palmer's Lodge

'Canny travellers book a few nights at Palmer’s Lodge. Built as a folly, it is now a smartly renovated hidey-hole in the heart of the park. A canopied bed delivers woodland views – irresistible for incurable romantics.'
The Observer

Palmer's Lodge is an attractive and unusual two-bedroom lodge situated on a private road within the historic Holkham Park, which has been home to generations of the Earls of Leicester for nearly 300 years.

Designed by Samual Wyatt and built in 1799, the lodge once marked the Park boundary. For 150 years, Palmer's Lodge was lived in by Estate workers, such as gamekeepers and woodsmen, until 1949, when it became somewhat dilapidated.

In 1990, the present Lord Leicester embarked on a six-year restoration of the property, after which it was used for lunch for shooting parties on the Estate. The present Lord Coke, as a batchelor, lived there briefly in 1994 in the underground bedroom. In 2003, it was again transformed and further renovated as a secluded holiday destination.

Palmer's Lodge sleeps up to six and has its own kitchen, dining room and a sitting room, complete with an open log fire. The uniqueness of this lodge means that the living area and second bedroom on the left are separated by the magnificent central archway from the master bedroom on the right. There is no linking corridor and access is external.

Well behaved dogs are welcome at Palmer's Lodge. The opportunities for relaxing walks in the area are endless and the wide expanse of Holkham Beach is highly recommended.

Important Information

Palmer's Lodge has TV and a DVD player. It is possible to borrow DVDs from a small library at reception at The Victoria.

On arrival, guests will find the fridge stocked with ingredients for a full English breakfast, orange juice, tea and coffee. The property is self-catering. Alternatively in the evenings, guests can drive two miles through the Park to dine at The Victoria.

Palmer's Lodge is situated in a very sensitive area for wildlife and we therefore ask that guests do not walk through the woods either side of the lodge.

There is a 30mph speed limit within Holkham Park and guests are asked to be careful when driving, due to the herd of fallow deer which roam freely.

On checking in, guests staying at Palmer's Lodge will be given keys to the Park gates. Please note that if the keys are lost, £200 will be charged to cover the cost of changing the locks. The Park gates are locked at 7pm.
