Plumbe and Maufe Farming

Plumbe and Maufe Farming are a family partnership that rents one of the Holkham Estates' farms bordering Holkham Park on the west side near Burnham Thorpe.  Mr Maufe farmed from 1947 until 1991 when his daughter Nina Plumbe took over.

We have a Caravan Club certified location site for 5 caravans situated at Leith House Farm just off the B1155 between Burnham Market and Wells next the Sea.  There are no hookups, but dogs are welcome and no fuss made about awnings!

Between Mid July and Mid September Plumbe and Maufe Farming sell Plums, Gages, Apples and our own Apple Juice from a farm shop situated in the orchards near Leith House.  Over 25 varieties of plums and gages are available during this 2 month season; all are stone free and are eating varieties.  The ready picked plums are picked on the day of sale and are thus ripe and delicious to eat straight away!  We also cater for PYO.  The orchards are managed by Nina Plumbe in a traditional manner. We sell the plums in small punnets that are ideal for taking with you to the beach.  We can also supply in bigger quantities!  Most of the apples grown are pressed and bottled locally in Wells.  The juice is only available from ourselves.

From this season onwards it is going to be possible to walk over the Roman Tumulus that has formed part of the orchard but is now becoming part of a Countryside Stewardship scheme on the farm.

PRUDENS QUI PATIENS - The origins of the family crest - the ostrich standing on the Coat of Arms - are fascinating. During the time of the celebrated Lawyer, Sir Edward Coke his "Digests of Law" suggested the ostrich, due to its reputation of having a cast iron digestion. The surname Coke was sometimes spelt "Cook" as it is pronounced today. In Latin the work Coquo means not only Cook, but also digest. Coke's motto was "Prudens Qui Patiens", the Prudent One is the Patient One". A further three words highlight his wit " etemin durissima coquit" - "because he digests the very hardest things."
