Introduction

LINSEED OIL WAX

Linseed oil wax is made from linseed oil and bees wax. The wax is used as a surface protector on unpainted, varnished or painted wooden surfaces. The wax is easy to apply with a sponge or cloth. The surface should be clean and dry.

Ideal for protecting exterior hardwoods.

1 litre of wax should cover 20 square metres.

Instructions for Softwood and Hardwood Floorboards, Furniture and Doors

Suitable for use on timber floors and work surfaces (not kitchen worktops), furniture, garden furniture, wooden decks, windows and doors, where a bare wood finish is preferred.

  1. Clean the wooden surface with Linseed Oil Soap or brush/sand away loose dusts.
  2. Softwood Floors: Brush Holkham Casein onto the planks following the direction of the grain (for mixing instructions please see below). Remember to stir frequently so that the mixture remains constant.  Drying time is at least two hours.  After drying, floorboards should be lightly sanded and then vacuumed.

Hardwood¹ and Softwood Furniture and Doors: Warm Holkham Raw Linseed Oil (a) to approximately 60°c, apply one coat to the timber.  Allow to dry thoroughly – 24 to 48 hours.

  1. Apply a coat of Holkham Linseed Oil Wax using a lint free cloth (b), sponge or brush, working it into the surface as you go.  This will be facilitated if you apply heat at the same time from a heat gun (not too hot) or a hairdryer.
  2. A couple of hours after application please polish using a soft cloth (b).
  3. A second coat of wax may then be applied.  Leave at least a fortnight before applying this coat, to give the Linseed Wax time to cure properly.  Again, wait a couple of hours before polishing.  (Floorboards can be walked on between coats).  Footprints and other marks in the wax that now appear will disappear by themselves.

Hints and Tips

For mixing Casein: One part Casein is mixed with one part water (e.g. 2oz Casein and 2oz water).  Mix until there are no lumps.  Leave to settle for 30 minutes.  Stir and then add as much water again as there now is glue (e.g. if 4oz glue, add 4oz water).  The mixture should now have a viscosity reminiscent of milk and therefore thinly fluid.  It can now be used for approximately 8 hours.

a: We do not recommend applying Casein to hardwood floors as it will stain the timber a deep brown.  This is due to the natural tannin in the wood reacting with the casein.  If in any doubt as to whether the timber is softwood, please mix a small quantity of Casein and test a small inconspicuous area or off cut of the same wood.  Allow to dry.  If the colour darkens dramatically then you probably have a hardwood floor.

b: Cloths and rags soaked in linseed oil can spontaneously combust.  Please soak in water before disposal in outside waste.

Maintenance: Further coats of Linseed Oil Wax will be required approximately every two to four years for external surfaces (depending on aspect), and more frequently for floorboards (depending on footfall).  Future coats of wax can be applied over the top of existing coats (we would recommend that the timber is cleaned first) and polished in the same manner as above.
Mops and spills should be sponged off the surface.  Clean floors periodically (not too frequently) with approximately one teaspoon of Holkham Linseed Oil Soap in a bucketful of hot water.

Casein: 750g of casein powder will make 3 litres of glue, which should cover 30 square metres of floorboards.  Available in 750g tubs or 50g sample bags.
Linseed Oil Wax: 1 litre of wax should cover 20 square metres.  Available in 100ml sample jars, 0.3 litre tins, and 1 and 3 litre tubs.
Raw Linseed Oil: 1 litre of oil should cover approximately 20 square metres.  Available in 1, 5 and 10 litre bottles.
