Introduction

CASEIN

This traditional material is mixed with water to form a hardwearing natural sealant for pine. To be used where a bare wood effect is preferred i.e. floorboards.

750g of casein powder will make 3 litres of sealer, which should cover 30 square metres of pine floorboards.

Available in 750g pack and 50g sample.

Instructions for using Casein

NB. Oak floors will only require linseed oil wax.  Casein will greatly darken the colour of hardwoods, such as Oak and Chestnut.

Mixing the Casein:

  1. One part Casein powder is mixed with one part water (e.g. 2oz casein and 2oz water).
  2. Mix until there are no lumps.
  3. Leave to settle for 30 minutes.
  4. Stir again and add as much water again as there now is glue (e.g. 4oz glue add 4oz water).
  5. The mixture should now have a viscosity reminiscent of milk and therefore thinly fluid.
  6. It can now be used for about the following 8 hours.
     
New pine cupboard door sealed with casein, a natural alternative to solvent based polyurethane varnish.
NB the adjacent new window painted inside and out with Holkham Linseed Paint, Barley White.

Application:

  1. Brush the Casein onto the planks following the direction of the grain.
  2. Remember to stir frequently so that the mixture remains constant.
  3. Drying time is at least 2 hours.
  4. After drying, floorboards should be lightly sanded and then vacuumed.
  5. A coat of Linseed Oil Wax should then be worked evenly into the floor. This will be facilitated if you apply heat at the same time from, for example, a hair dryer.
  6. After this treatment the floor is ready for use.
  7. Footprints and other marks in the wax that now appear will disappear by themselves.
