The Lake Walk

Wooden posts with yellow painted tops have been placed along the route of this walk, to assist you.

This 3.7 mile walk circles around the Lake in Holkham Park. In season, visitors have an opportunity to visit Holkham Hall, the Bygones Museum, Pottery Shop and Stables Café as a halfway stop.

The walk starts at the car park in Park Road, Holkham Village. From here, continue along the avenue of Holm Oaks to the north gates, through the pedestrian access and into the Park. Turn right, past the unusual octagonal cottages built by Samuel Wyatt, and continue along the main path through the woodland. The track bears to the right close to the Monument and takes a line along the top of the dam, past the sluice, which controls the level of the lake, through the iron gate and up an incline towards the flint church of St Withburga's. Please remember to leave the gate as you find it.

With the Church on your right, continue across Church Paddock, until you reach the other end of the lake and the wood known as Hill 60. Again, please remember to leave the gate as you find it. At the junction ahead, bear to the left, past the Ice House and left again to the North of the Hall. Continue on the main route to the Hall. The two impressive bronze lions at the entrance to the Hall will feature on your right. At this point, bear left across parkland towards the Monument, which rises up amongst the trees to the North. His farm tenants erected the Monument in memory of Thomas William Coke, the great agriculturist. Its panels and carvings depict aspects of his contribution to agricultural progress. From the Monument you can rejoin the main woodland track and retrace your steps back to the starting point of the walk at the Almshouses.

N.B. Dogs are welcome in the park but must be kept on the lead at all times. This is to avoid disturbing the deer and other wildlife.
