Our Second Christmas Weekend

Take a glimpse of our Victorian Celebrations in the hall as we welcomed Her Majesty Queen Victoria to stay. Costumed characters, rooms bedecked in yuletide splendour and plenty of festive fun was had by all. What fond memories this video will bring for many of our visitors.

Our First Christmas Weekend

As we waited to open the doors to our visitors, here is a glimpse of our first Christmas weekend at Holkham. The state rooms looking magnificent dressed for the festive season, whilst the Victorian Fayre in the courtyard was a hive of activity with costumed traders, music and carol singing. Why not join us for our second weekend on 3 & 4 December when Queen Victoria arrives to stay for the celebrations!

Preparing the Hall for Christmas

A behind-the-scenes look as we embark of the massive task of decorating the state rooms in Holkham Hall in preparation for our first ever Christmas opening. Join us to see the house in all its splendour on 26 & 27 November and 3 & 4 December.

Bringing the Christmas Tree into the Hall

"Deck the Hall with boughs of holly, tra-la-la-la." We are getting in the festive mood and making preparations to decorate the house for Christmas. Let’s take a look back to last year and the arrival of the enormous fir tree for The Saloon ready for the Christmas play. Watch out for more videos as we lead up to our first Christmas celebration.

A Holkham Halloween

Hubble, bubble toil and trouble! Our fun-packed Halloween event brought witches, warlocks, ghosts and devils in their droves to help us celebrate all things grisly and ghoulish!.

Tour of the Private Gardens

On the 23rd October, you can enjoy a wonderful opportunity to view the private gardens at Holkham, which are normally closed to the public.

Escorted by Tim Marshall, Holkham's Landscape Manager, see the spectacular arboretum with its many unusual and rare specimen trees resplendent at this time of year with foliage in an array of autumnal tones. Tim has filmed this video to give you a little sneak peak preview of what to expect.

Holkham Harvest 2011

Holkham's Farms Manager Mark Bowyer takes the camera to witness this year’s harvest.

Writtle College at Holkham

Writtle College were at Holkham from Sunday the 25th of September to Friday the 30th. There were thirty 2nd Year students helping in the vegetable garden with the brick edging and putting hardcore down for the paths. They also helped in the nursery - weeding and helping to reinstate an old polytunnel structure.

Red Bull Event - 'The Jump'

James Bracey, our Estate Surveyor, joining in the fun at the Red Bull team building event at Holkham in August. 30 feet is a long way down when you're up the top!

Deer Discovery Walk

Katy Poulton (Estate Office Administrator and editor of Holkham Uncovered) joined the Holkham Deer Keeper Glyn Ingram on one of his Deer Discovery walks. These walks only occur in June, and they give the public a chance to stroll in the park with Glyn to gain an insight into the lives of the deer and how the parkland is managed.

Open Farm Sunday

In June, Holkham held its first Open Farm Sunday event. Visitors enjoyed demonstrations of working farm machinery, sheep shearing and were able to get a close view of calves and lambs. By far the most popular attraction on the day was our trailer tour around the farm to see and learn about the crops Holkham grows.

The Teddy Bear's Circus

As part of our fun-filled Teddy Bear Weekend, which took place over the Whitsun bank holiday weekend, The Teddy Bear's Circus came to town. Brought to us by Historical Promotions, our first theatre production of the season featured a marvellous medley of marionettes, all fully trained in circus artistry, and was thoroughly enjoyed by children by children of all ages (and by quite a few adults too!).

Pond Dipping at Holkham

During a recent fun event in the park children had the chance to explore Holkham’s watery world with a pond dipping day. In partnership with Natural England staff everyone had the chance to learn about the bugs and mini-beasts that make the lake their home.

The next opportunity to discover the wildlife of the park will be in June with our Deer Discovery walks every Wednesday of the month at 11am and 2pm.

Easter at Holkham

The Easter bank holiday weekend at Holkham was a tremendous success and great fun for all the family. Glorious sunshine and everything from a rabbit-themed quiz to entertainment from colourful clown/balloon modeller Justo James and juggler Stevie Spud. There was even a visit from our own fun Easter rabbit. Holkham was transformed into an Easter Eggstravaganza and this film captures just some of the fun.

The Beach Café

In this video, Café Manager Johanna Tennant takes us through the new Beach Café. The Beach Café at Wells-next-the-Sea is open all year. In an idyllic location, backed by mature pine woods and only a stone's throw from the beach, the café is a vibrant place to eat, drink, shop and the perfect venue to meet.

Cooking with Eileen

In this edition of Holkham Uncovered, baker Eileen Heyhoe shows us how to bake some delicious meringues. Marketing Manager Laurane Herrieven goes through each step of the recipe as Eileen bakes.

If you would like to bake these meringues at home, click here to download Eileen's recipe.

NADFAS at Holkham: Conservation in Action

This video shows a group of volunteers from NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies) who have been working at Holkham on a conservation project since October 2010. The volunteers, from two local groups - King's Lynn NADFAS and Glaven Valley NADFAS - have set up a workshop in the North State Sitting Room of the Hall. In this video you will see them working on the silver thread embroidered bedspread from the Brown State Bedroom and other furnishings from the bedroom.

The Houseman's Trilogy
Part 3: Rubens' "The Flight into Egypt"

In the final instalment of the Houseman’s Trilogy, we see the Peter Paul Rubens painting “The Holy Family on the Return to Egypt” returned to the hall. The painting has been on loan to the Norwich Museum for 4 months as part of the museum’s "The Art of Faith" exhibition. The painting is unusual, as it depicts Christ as a boy of four or five, rather than as a baby or a man. Once back in its frame and re-hung, visitors to the hall will be able to see it in the saloon.
The Houseman's Trilogy
Part 2: Brass Polishing

This video shows Houseman Mark Taylor cleaning two brass ornaments displayed in the State Rooms.

The Houseman's Trilogy
Part 1: Window Restoration

Houseman Mark Taylor has been filming his very own video diary for Holkham Uncovered. The video shows part of the long term window restoration project in the Hall. The ‘Windowcraft’ team have been restoring the Hall windows for approximately six years, and it is estimated that there are a further 2 years of work left to do. With thanks to Mark Taylor for filming this project.

Preparing for the new season

Manager Colin Shearer takes you through the house to show you the hard work that goes on behind the scenes as we prepare the Marble Hall for the first classical music concert this season, Schubert in Splendour, a fundraising event for the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE).

We also see staff preparing the state rooms and other areas of the hall for opening on April 1st and a unique insight into the restoration of one of the main windows in the Marble Hall.

Feeding the deer

Holkham is home to around 800 fallow deer and 50 red deer. In the winter months, when food is sparse, Deer Keeper Glyn Ingram feeds the deer a sugar beet mix. This video provides a rare opportunity to see the deer being fed.

Many thanks to Glyn for allowing us to film this and thanks to Hayley Jones (Glyn's Partner) for filming it.

Holkham Farming

This video shows Holkham Emerald Limited harvesting potatoes on land at Burnham Thorpe and loading customers' boxes for despatch to the potato store. You will also see winter wheat being drilled on in-house land in Holkham park, which when ready, will be harvested in August this year, plus footage of some of the herd of fat cattle housed for finishing, prior to delivery to Arthur Howell's Butchers of Wells-next-the-Sea.

With thanks to Mark Bowyer, Holkham Farming Company Limited, Farm Manager and Tom Fox Video Services for providing the footage for this video.

The Rose Garden Café re-opens

The Rose Garden Café has reopened after undergoing a complete make-over. Situated on the A149 as you come into Holkham Village, the café offers a wide variety of delicious fresh produce, all locally made (and which you will hear Nerida Britton talk about in the film). In the film you will hear Johanna Lissack from Holkham Enterprises speak to the Café Supervisor Nerida Britton just minutes before opening its doors for the first time. The Rose Garden Café is open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm. Please do come and try it out!

Preparing for Christmas!

As Christmas loomed, Lady Coke and some of the staff of Holkham Estate made the Hall look more festive. The Hall needed to be ready for Holkham's Christmas play, "The Canterville Ghost". Hall Manager Colin Shearer took the video camera along to film the preparations.

The Christmas tree was hoisted into place in the Saloon and decorated. Watch the Marble Hall transform in time for the Christmas Play, all assisted by Lady Coke, Colin Shearer (Hall Manager), Ian Barratt (Hall Carpenter), Mark Taylor (Houseman), Maria Booth (Head Housekeeper), Kerry Cave (Events Co-ordinator), Lou Bailey (Electrician) and anyone else that happened to walk through at that time! The Marble Hall and the Saloon looked magnificent when finished, and the festive spirit increased as the fires were lit and the audience enjoyed a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine during the interval!
