The History of Holkham Cricket Club
We know that cricket on the north lawn at Holkham has been played since 1780, as a receipt was found for 'cutting the nettles on the cricket pitch on the north lawn' dated from that year.
It seems probable that cricket has been on this very spot since the hall was built.
We are currently researching the history of Holkham Cricket Club and have assembled a nice collection of photos which are now hanging in the Visitors' Changing Room of the club house. Pre or post-match viewings are welcome.
The club had grown to such a size that in the 80s we were playing 60 home games a year. The Foot and Mouth crisis in 2001 meant that we were unable to play any matches at all and the club all but folded. A few dedicated members restarted the club in 2002 with games on Saturdays only and slowly the fixtures are being expanded again. We play clubs from all over the country and a very important part of our constitution is that we only play friendly cricket - no league games, to our knowledge, have ever been played at Holkham. New players are always welcome.
We are always interested to hear from ex-players or interested historians who have more information. Old score books or press cutting are particularly welcome.
